5-On-4 Box Play #5A (Seal The Crease) & Play #5B (Back-Door Crease)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
5A. Off-Ball Crease - "Seal"
- The point player drags towards the strong-side shooter (which triggers the strong-side crease player to cut to the middle) and then passes to the weak-side shooter, who passes to the same-side crease player.
- The crease player can pass the ball if this "cutter" is wide-open (Option #1), but if they are not open the cutter should seal the crease defender, with the strong-side (off-ball) shooter cutting around the same time (reading the play), for an overload at the crease position (Option #2).
- Variation: Instead of cutting to the middle the off-ball shooter can do a back-door cut for a quick stick attempt (Option #1). If the defender fights over the seal, then the sealer should be open rolling in front of the net as Option #2.
5B. Off-Ball Crease - "Back-Door"
- The point player passes to the weak-side shooter, which triggers a cut through the middle from the strong-side shooter.
- If the cutter is wide open they can receive a pass but otherwise they should cross-pick for the far-side crease player.
- While this is happening the weak-side shooter passes back to the point player and cuts to the back-door crease.
- The point player fakes shooting and either passes to the crease player cutting around the pick (Option #2) or the back door cutter (Option #1), ideally for a quick stick shot. After a pass is made to either of the first 2 options, if the player doesn't like what they see they can look to the back-door crease for a quick stick (Option #3).
-
- Variation: A simpler version of this play is to not send the cross pick, in an equally threatening scenario for the "overloaded" defender; a play historically known as the "Mississauga Slide."
- Variation: This play can also be run as its mirror opposite, although it is a more technical (advanced) pass across the body of the point player to the strong-side crease player.
- Note: This play also works well against a Diamond defense.
