Offense Drill #1B: “Give & Go’s” (Shooter & Crease)
- Demo (1 min): Timing, Touch Passes
-
- *Variation #1 (7 min): "Pass To Coach." Have players lined up on their proper floor side, at the shooter positions, on both sides of the floor, in one or both ends. Balls are at the shooter lines, with coaches in corner at the crease position.
-
- The ball carrier fades towards the side boards, passes low then cuts to the middle. The coach receives the pass and passes it back to the cutter (before they reach their wrong-side) in the middle of the floor (Variation #1A).
-
- Another suggested variation of this drill is for the coach to roll the ball into the middle (as if a loose ball or rebound off of a shot), with the cutter having to quickly pick up the ball and make a move on the goalie “in tight” (Variation #1B).
*Variation #2 (7 min): "North-South Give & Go." Have players lined up in equal numbers on their proper floor side, at the crease and shooter positions, on both sides of the floor, in one or both ends; balls at the shooter lines. To start the drill, the ball carrier fades toward the side boards, passes low then cuts to the middle (1 second delay). The crease players pop out to receive the pass (“flashing their stick”) and passes it back to the cutter (before they reach their wrong-side) in the middle of the floor (Variation #2A).
Alternate this pattern back and forth on both sides of the floor. After taking a turn in the shooter line, players rotate down to the crease line and vice-versa.
Another suggested variation of this drill is for the crease player to roll the ball into the middle (as if a loose ball or rebound off of a shot), with the cutter having to quickly pick up the ball and make a move on the goalie "in tight" (Variation #2B). Advanced players can also challenge each other with a tricky bounce.
*Variation #3 (7 min): "East-West Give & Go." Begin with a line of left-handed and a line of right-handed players on their proper floor sides, a little bit wider than the shooter positions. For beginners, start with the balls on one side only, and then the other. The first player in the line without balls cuts the middle while the ball carrier moves their feet and passes to the cutter. Once the player shoots, the next players take their turn.
For intermediate/advanced players, both lines have balls except for the first player in one line who starts the drill by running towards the other line in an effort to shorten up the pass. Once the pass is received the ball carrier drags back to their starting position (shooter spot) while the original passer makes a jab-step (half-second delay) and then cuts the middle receiving a pass for a shot (coach can also request that the pass be received closer to the crease as opposed to in the middle aka "back door." The opposite side line then repeats the same process.
*Variation #4 & #5 (7 min): "Dummy Defenders." Is the same as above variations #2 & #3 except there is a volunteer defender playing “soft” defense at the shooter position on both sides of the floor (Variation #4); simulating the the battle required to get to the middle. There can also be another volunteer defender "window washing" the passer (Variation #5). The coach can also request that defenders force the cutter to one side or the other, so the offensive player is approaching the net from different angles.
Another option instead of a volunteer defender is for the first player in the shooter line to play defense, later taking their turn on offense (after the other side takes their turn), switching to the crease line after they shoot; and vice-versa.
*Most common error = passers not keeping their feet moving while making/receiving the pass
