Goaltending Drill #9: Dallas’ Reaction Drill
ADVANCED
- Have players line up at one end of the floor, on their proper floor sides, at the shooter, point & opposite-handed crease positions, respectively.
- As this drill is for the goalies reaction time, players should use soft balls or tennis balls in order to not injure the goalie (i.e. if they are unable to adequately react to a shot). Advanced players may be permitted to have the initial shooter start with a real (India rubber) ball.
- Each sequence (repetition) through this drill should start with the goalie making eye contact with the shooter; with players switching lines each time through the drill.
- Variation #1 (7 min): "Shooter/Mid-Board/Doorstep." The shooter starts with an outside shot from the shooter position, and a half second later (timing) the player in the off-ball mid-board line loads up a shot that challenges the goalies reaction time and lateral movement. All the while, the player from the point position line has been running toward the net, finishing with a third shot from inside ("on the door step"); "bang-bang-bang" in orientation.
- Move the shooter line to the crease position and the crease line to the shooter position (inverse of each other), halfway through the drill.
- Variation #2 (7 min): "Point/Mid-Board/Doorstep." Another sequence within this drill would be to start with an outside shot from the point position, with a designated second shooter shooting from the mid-boards and a third player finishing with a third shot from inside at the opposite-side crease.
