Transition Drill #2B: Dougie T’s “Breakout Pass Variation”
INTERMEDIATE
- Players start in the middle of the defensive zone, with a line of "lefty's" and a line of "righty's" on their proper-floor side, facing opposite side-boards; balls with whichever line is facing the far-side ("away from the bench").
- Variation #1 (7 min): "Far-Side Pass." The first player in the line with balls rolls a ball off of the side-boards, then breaks along the boards ("outside lane"), with the first player in the opposite line also taking off running in the outside lane on the opposite side of the floor. This player could also utilize the bench (to make it more game specific - as seen in the diagram), starting with a couple of players on the bench for either a short change (Variation #1A) or long change (Variation #1B).
- The second player in the line with balls corrals the loose ball as it bounces off of the boards and then breaks toward the "inside lane."
After making eye contact with the passer, the player in the outside lane cuts off of the boards toward the middle as they receive an outlet pass, eventually passing to the player in the outside lane on the bench-side of the floor (breakaway or imaginary 2-on-1). These two players stay in the far end while the player who made the first outlet pass comes back to line, receives a ball from the player behind them, and then copies the previous action of the player they passed to.
Coaches (or volunteer defenders) can also stand in certain areas of the floor and force the pass.
Variation #2 (7 min): "Make A Move." Same as the above variation except the player receiving the first outlet pass makes a basic offensive move after receiving the pass: "stutter steps,” "hitch-step," "face dodges," "roll dodges (left & right)," "toe drags," and/or "swims."
Variation #3 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #4 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #5 (5 min): "Scrambled." This variation could be applied to any of the above variations whereby players must start on a different side of the floor each time through the drill (with two mixed lines of lefts and rights), ultimately leaving an undetermined number of players on their wrong floor-side; having to identify the situation and still get off a quality shot.
