Warm-Up Drill #7A: 3 Player Shuttles
- Arrange players into groups of 3, in a straight line, with the outside players approximately 15 metres apart and a third player in the middle. Switch who is in the middle every 30 seconds at the sound of the coaches whistle, with each player getting two turns in the middle.
- Beginner and Intermediate players can also begin practicing their on-floor communication skills, first learning and then saying the name of each player before they pass it to them.
- Intermediate players can be encouraged to keep their feet moving while passing and advanced players can be encouraged to mix up their release points. They can also practice catching the ball "facing away" from the passer for more of a challenge in any of the variations below.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "Reaction Pass." Start with both outside players having balls and the player in the middle facing one or the other player. The player in the middle switches back and forth with who they are looking at, catching a pass and then passing it back to the same person, before eventually turning and receiving another pass.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Inside/Outside Turn." Start with the middle player closer to one outside player than another, facing the player they are furthest away from. The player in the middle passes the ball to this person and continues running forward until they receive the pass back. As they receive the pass back they either turn into the ball (Variation #2A), or turn away from the ball (Variation #2B). As a reference point, "turning into the ball" would see the player turn in toward the mid-line of their body with their top-hand shoulder, whereas "turning away from the ball" would be turning away from the players' mid-line. The player in the middle continues back and forth, switching patterns each time through the drill.
Variation #3 (5 min): "Pass & Fill." Start with two players near the boards on one side of the floor and one player near the boards on the other side (otherwise closer together with a set distance marked out by pylons). On the side with two players, the first player has a ball and takes a short run before passing to the player on the far-side; players fill in behind the player they passed to, continuously passing & filling for the duration of the drill (high cardio effect).
Variation #4 (5 min): "Exchange Pass." Start with the middle player facing one outside partner or the other, running towards that player; and that player running toward them. These two players exchange positions, turn and face each other (button hook), and then quickly exchange a pass. The player who is now in the middle turns and runs towards the other outside player, repeating the above action over and over for the allotted amount of time.
Variation #5 (5 min): "Flip/Dump Passes." Same as the variation above except as players cross paths they exchange a "flip pass," a "dump pass" or a combination of the two.
In order for this drill variation to flow properly, if players are doing flip passes only lefties will need to run to the right side of the player across from them and vice-versa for righties. If the coach asks for dump passes only then lefties should stay on the left side of the player across from them and vice-versa for righties.
