Warm-Up Drill #10A: “X” Passing (Repetitive Skip Passes)
INTERMEDIATE
- Have players line up in equal numbers, on their proper floor side crease and shooter positions, on both sides of the floor, forming a large square in the offensive zone.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "Low To High Skip Pass." Have a crease player skip pass one ball across the diagonal (to the shooter on the opposite side of the floor), with this shooter then passing it down to the adjacent crease (Variation #1A). This crease player then replicates the same pattern passing to the opposite shooter across from them. Advance to two balls (Variation #1B) once players demonstrate an understanding of the pattern. Start both balls at the creases for "timing" purposes, with players on one side of the floor slowing down, or speeding up, in order to maintain proper timing.
- Passers and receivers should always have their feet moving. Have the players also commit to the habit of taking a quick look at the net once they catch the ball, “being a threat” to shoot before they pass.
- Players should switch between the crease and shooter lines each time through the drill, exiting outside of the drill once complete. Goalies should be working on their passing outside of the drill; otherwise working on their footwork, tracking the ball as it is passed around (focused on one ball); possibly receiving a shot from either the lefty's or righty's (predetermined) approximately every 20 seconds (on the coaches whistle). Variation #2 (5 min): "High to Low Skip Pass." Same as the variations above except the skip passes are from high to low, instead of low to high (Variation #2A). The adjacent pass goes from the same-side crease to same-side shooter in this variation. Advance to two balls (Variation #2B) once players demonstrate an understanding of the pattern; start both balls at the crease (timing). (Draw Diagram)
- Variation #3 (5 min): "No Drops Game." For every ball that is dropped during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other.
