Transition Drill #4A: Multiple Player Out & Ups
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with 2 lines of players, on their proper floor sides, on both sides of the crease, at one end of the floor; every other player on one side of the floor should have a ball.
- The second player in one line should be ready with a ball. The first player in the same line should be ready without a ball, as well as one player from the opposite line also without a ball. The first player in the line sending two players steps out to the shooter position and the second player to the crease position; the single player from the other line also steps out to the crease position on the other side of the floor.
The low outlet with the ball rolls or bounces the ball into the goalie and both low outlets run (or backpedal) towards the mid-boards, while the high outlet runs hard towards where the restraining-line meets the side-boards, but not until the goalie has possession of the ball. The single player from the opposite side line also breaks along the boards on their side of the floor.
Variation #1A (7 min): "Head-Player Pass." The low outlet from the line with two players receives the pass, runs up-floor (towards centre-floor) and makes a pass to the player running along the side-boards in the far-side lane, who now cuts away from the boards on a 45° angle and subsequently makes a pass to the remaining player on the bench-side for a breakaway shot (replicating a bench assist scenario).
Whatever line had only two players participate sends one player the next time through the drill (unless there is a shortage of lefty’s or righty’s). Players should keep the ball "away from the bench" as a general rule.
Variation #1B (7 min): "Hit The Trailer." Another variation of this drill would be to pass the ball up to the far-side high outlet and have them run it deep to the mid-boards, eventually passing to one of the trailers for a shot.
Variation #1C (7 min): "Off-Ball Pick & Roll." Another variation of this drill would be to head-player pass the ball to the weak-side when approaching the prime scoring area, having the players execute an off-ball pick & roll, which is the final opportunity when a fast-break turns to even numbers (otherwise players would generally "pull it out" and get into a set-offense).
Variation #2 & #3 (10 min): "4 & 5 Player Spacing." Advance to 4 and then 5 players participating at once, with 2 (or 3) players from one line and 2 players from the other. Players pass from side-to-side with each pass, with all players timing their cuts and running their Lanes properly, slowing up where necessary; pass patterns can also be mixed up at the coaches discretion. (Draw Diagram)
Variation #4 (7 min): "Pressure." Another variation of the above drills would be for coaches (or volunteer defenders) to apply varying amounts of pressure to the players who are trying to breakout of the defensive zone. If players are being utilized to apply pressure, they should first play defense, then breakout of the zone the next rep, with new defenders coming into the drill each rep.
Variation #5 (7 min): "Scrambled." This variation could be applied to any of the above variations, whereby players must start on a different side of the floor each time through the drill (beginning with two mixed lines of lefts and rights), ultimately leaving an undetermined number of players on their wrong floor-side; having to identify the situation and still get off a quality shot.
Variation #6 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #7 (7 min): "Add Defenders." Same as the above variations except two defenders (or coaches) are added in the I-formation (Variation #7A), three defenders are added in either a 1-Up/2-Back or 2 Back/1-Up Triangle (Variation #7B), or 4 defenders are added in a Box. If players are acting as defenders, whoever shoots the ball is out of the drill and the remaining players defend against the next 3-on-2, 4-on-3 or 5-on-4 fast-break.
