Transition Drill #8B: Broken Play 2-On-1’s & 3-On-2’s
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with two (or three) lines of offensive players at the restraining-line (near or far), on their proper floor side, facing one or both directions.
- A volunteer (or two) defender starts on the restraining-line, split between both offensive lines. Following the first rep through the drill, the last offensive player to touch the ball is out of the drill, with the other offensive player(s) running up to the restraining-line to play defense. The defender(s) should start facing away from the offensive players, with all players reacting upon sight of the loose ball.
- A coach starts the drill by dumping a loose ball into the offensive zone. The defender then needs to pressure the ball, or retreat into position to split the two offensive players, trying to "force" them to take a bad shot.
Variation #1B (10 min): "Defenders At The Bench." Same as the above variation except the defender begins standing close to a real or hypothetical defensive door. In this variation, 2 or 3 extra volunteer defenders also need to start at the bench, in order to not have to wait for defenders to run to the bench each time (to keep the flow of the drill).
All players should keep an eye for if there is a line that is visibly short and fill the line, with coaches also being sure to start the defensive players from the opposite side of the floor as well (switching sides halfway through the drill).
Variation #2 (20 min): "3-On-2's." Same as Variation #1 except two players play defense and a third line of offensive players begin in the middle. Following the first rep through the drill, the last player to touch the ball is out of the drill, with the other two players staying in on defense.
Variation #3 (20 min): "Progressively Closer/Further Away." Same as Variations #1 & #2 except all players start progressively closer to (Variation #3A), or further from (Variation #3B), the net each time through the drill.
By moving players closer they have to make quicker decisions, and by moving them further back into the defensive zone, it adds more of a cardio element and replicates the most prevalent scenario in games.
Variation #4 (20 min): "With A Chaser." Same as the above variations except an extra defender starts 5-10 metres behind the play and chases the offensive players in an attempt to bring the play back to even-strength.
The "chaser" should alternate between coming from the line of "lefty's" and the line of "righty's" each rep through the drill; with all players taking at least one turn chasing.
