Warm-Up Drill #15A: 3 Player “Weave”
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with 3 lines at centre-floor, two outside lines with players on their proper floor side and a third line in the middle (with balls) made up of both left-handed and right-handed players.
- Variation #1A (5 min): "Passes Only." Facing one or both directions, players in the middle line start by throwing a pass to the line of same-handed players (i.e. right-handed players pass to the right-handed player line). All players subsequently follow their pass and "fill" the "lane" of the player they passed to.
- The outside line that received the first pass then passes to the other outside line, as they cut towards the net. This player looks to the net as if they’re shooting and shoots (Option #1) or passes to the player who started the drill in the middle line (Option #2), finishing with a shot from their proper-side.
- Players then exit the drill by jogging along the side-boards and out of the way of the next group in the drill.
Variation #1B (5 min): "One Up, One Down." Same as the variation above except this variation is done using a combination of loose balls and passes.
Variation #2 (5 min): "Progressively Closer/Further Away." Same as Variation #1 except all players start progressively closer to (Variation #2A), or further from (Variation #2B), the net each time through the drill.
By moving players closer they have to make quicker decisions, and by moving them further back into the defensive zone, it adds more of a cardio element and replicates a more game-like scenario.
Variation #3 (5 min): "Hold Your Lane." Same as the variations above except players no longer follow their pass, instead staying in their "lane" and playing the situation as an imaginary 3-on-2 (no defenders). The middle player shouldn't pass until they are at the cusp of the prime scoring area. There is no set order of who should pass to whom after that; finishing with a quality shot on the goalie.
Variation #4 (5 min): "Force The Play." Another variation of the drills above would be for a coach to stand at the cusp of the prime scoring area and either force a pass (pressure) or "fall back" and thus encourage the ball carrier to shoot.
Variation #5 (5 min): "Quick Stick Finish." Same as the variations above except players are asked to finish with a quick stick shot on net (Variation #5A). A more advanced variation is for coaches to move players closer to the net to start and the entire drill can be done with quick stick passes and quick stick shots (Variation #5B).
Variation #6 (5 min): "Pick & Roll Finish." As another advanced variation, the coach can also ask that the players finish the play with a pick & roll on the strong-side, whether it be on-ball (Variation #6A) or off-ball (Variation #6B).
Variation #7 (5 min): "Add A Defender." Same as the above variations except one defender (or coach) is added at the high spot in the I-formation (Variation #7A) or the low spot in the I-Formation (Variation #7B). Whichever spot is filled by a defender, the other spot should have a pylon filling the vacant space (marking an imaginary defender). If players are acting as defenders, whoever shoots the ball stays in the drill on defense defending against the next 3 players in this imaginary fast-break.
