Half-Floor Trap
INTERMEDIATE DEFENSIVE SET
- Often times when teams transition into the offensive zone, a single player will run the ball to the far-side in the far end of the floor (not shown in diagram), while everyone else changes; especially after long shifts. This is the perfect time to double-team the ball carrier!
- Furthermore, if the defense has more "numbers" than the offense, players may also "press-out" coming off of the bench in order to execute a half-floor "trap" which is a tactic sometimes used in the NLL or International play. When there is a half-line at centre-floor, usually there is a maximum of 8 seconds to get the ball over, as well as an over-back rule that doesn't allow you back-over once you cross. In this scenario, even if the defense "runs in two's" (as shown in diagram) there may still be a possibility to double-team the ball carrier, or otherwise cause a turnover near the half-line.
- The golden rule is not to leave an offensive player open "in the hole" unless communicated by a teammate following you off of the bench. Usually the first or second player off of the bench is able to press-out, with the third player ending up "in the hole" (sometimes the opposite) and the fourth and fifth players also needing to pick up a check and be vocal about unrecognized opportunities to "double."
