INTERMEDIATE DEFENSIVE SET

• When a team has a successful press in action, such as a Lazy Press, or the opponent is otherwise slow breaking the ball out of the defensive zone, coaches will often tell defensive players coming off the bench to "press-up."  This an opportunity to kill further time off of the shot clock or possibly create a turnover if the player carrying the ball is an "egg & spooner." 

• The golden rule is not to leave an offensive player open "in the hole" unless communicated by a teammate following you onto the floor off of the bench.  Usually the first player off of the bench is clear to press-up (as shown in diagram) and the second player often ends up "in the hole" (sometimes the opposite), whereas the third, fourth and fifth players further need to pick up a check and also be vocal about opportunities to "double."  

• If any player gets beat in the open floor while pressing up, they need to yell "broken" or "off," indicating to all of their teammates that the press-up is off and to get back into the hole, setting up in the assigned team defense.
