Stickwork Drill #6B: Catch, Dodge & “Curl”
INTERMEDIATE
- Begin with a line of left-handed and a line of right-handed players on their proper floor sides at the shooter positions, with balls. Otherwise, start with coaches standing with balls at the shooter positions, with one coach passing to the line of "righty" shooters in one end of the floor, and the other coach passing to the line of "lefty" shooters at the other end.
Variation #1 (20 min): "Shooter To Shooter." Start with the balls on one side only, and then the other. The first player in the line with no balls and all other subsequent players in that line should be ready to receive a pass, from shooter-to-shooter. This player catches, face dodges or roll dodges underneath (mix it up), curls out and passes back to the original passer who cuts to the net and takes a shot-on-the-run (Variation #1A - 7 min), takes a set-shot (Variation #1B - 7 min) or gets "in tight" for a fake series (Variation #1C - 7 min).
Variation #2 (20 min): "Mid-Boards To Shooter." Same as the above variation except players on both sides start at the mid-boards, run to the shooter positions, and pass/catch the ball at full speed.
Variation #3 (20 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches instruct players to take a certain type of shot: overhand, side-arm, underhand, cripplers or bounce shots.
Variation #4 (20 min): "Screen Shots." The first player in one of the lines starts with no ball and receive a pass, from shooter-to-shooter. This player catches, face dodges, cuts underneath, and curls in the corner. After curling in the corner, the ball carrier cuts back toward the net and takes a shot (Variation #4A - 5 min), takes a shot around a "dummy defender" who is acting as a screen (Variation #4B - 5 min), or roll dodges (both directions) and then shoots around the dummy defender (Variation #4C - 10 min). After shooting, that player becomes the screen for the next shooter, after the other side takes their turn.
Variation #5 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
Variation #6 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #7 (7 min): "React to the Rebound." Same as the above variations except starting with all of the balls in one shooter line (switch sides half way through the drill). The shooter shoots the ball and both shooters need to "react to the rebound."
The general rule on offense is that the off-ball shooter is responsible for reacting back against reverse transition, which is true in this drill but there are also two other caveats. The first is that if the rebound goes to the off-ball shooters' side, the off-ball shooter pursues the loose ball and the on-ball shooter "reacts back." The second is that if the rebound goes to the on-ball shooters side, they attack the rebound and the off-ball shooter "reacts back." If the goalie corrals the rebound, both shooters react back.
If the rebound is corralled by either player on the first attempt, play continues, otherwise the coach blows the whistle and the players clear out of the drill after the loose ball is obtained.
Variation #8 (7 min): "Dummy Defenders." Is the same as above variations #1 & #2 except there is a volunteer defender playing “soft” defense at the shooter position on both sides of the floor (Variation #8A); simulating the battle required to get to the middle. Another option instead of a volunteer defender is for the first player in the shooter line to play defense, later taking their turn on offense (after the other side takes their turn), switching to the crease line after they shoot; and vice-versa. Advance to live 2 vs. 2 with defenders starting with their sticks touching in the middle of the defensive zone (Variation #8B).
