Warm-Up Drill #10B: “X” Shooting
INTERMEDIATE
- Have players line up in equal numbers on their proper floor sides, at the crease and shooter positions, on both sides of the floor, in one or both ends.
- Goalies should switch (rotate) every 3-5 minutes. Assistant coaches should collect balls to help "re-load" the players with balls after each sequence.
- Each player eventually passes and later receives a skip pass from the player diagonally across the floor from them. Passers should keep their feet moving versus passing flat-footed.
Variation #1 (7 min): "Cut & Shot-On-The-Run." Two players need to start without balls at the beginning of the drill and will only receive, and not pass, a ball. The order of who receives a pass can move counter-clockwise or clockwise in orientation (which is determined by the coaches prior to the start of the drill). If the first two left-handed players from each line start without balls (as seen in the diagram), the order of who will be receiving a pass (always from the player diagonally across from them) as per the diagram (clockwise) would be: left crease, left shooter, right shooter, right crease.
After passing, the players on the opposite diagonals then pass, with the passer next becoming the receiver after the opposite side takes their turn. Players exit the drill and switch lines (staying on their proper floor-side) after they shoot.
Another option for beginners is for only the high lines or only the low lines to have balls (switching roles between passer and receiver), or for there to be coach passers at either position, with players practicing receiving a skip pass for an outside shot or an inside shot.
Advanced players may be permitted to practice all types of shots from all types of angles, both on-the-run (cutting) and from a stationary position (set-shots from the perimeter); defensive specialists mostly practicing shooting-on-the run. (Draw Diagram)
Variation #2 (7 min): "Soft Spot Shooting." Same as the variation above except players do not "cut," instead they move to the soft spots and catch & shoot on perimeter shots.
Variation #3 (7 min): "6 Lines." Same as Variation #1 except one more line of lefty's and righty's are added to the "soft-spots" on both sides of the floor, passing to each other when it's their turn; providing more reps for larger groups. The rotation through the drill becomes, pass/shoot at the shooter position (line 1), move to the soft spot (line 2) and then to the crease (line 3), with the crease players running up to line 1 after shooting.
Variation #4 (7 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches instruct players to take a certain type of shot: overhand, side-arm, underhand, cripplers or bounce shots.
Variation #5 (7 min): "React to the Rebound." Same as the variations above except after players take their shot they are required to "react to the rebound." If the rebound goes to the far-side or the goalie corrals it, the on-ball shooter "reacts back." If the rebound goes to the on-ball side, that shooter attacks the rebound and finishes the play (if possible without disrupting the flow of the drill). Alternatively, only one side of the floor can have balls and act as passers (lefty's or righty's), with both passer and shooter having to "react to the rebound," switching roles halfway through the drill.
Variation #6 (7 min): "Dummy Defender Screens." Same as the variations above except that two "dummy defenders" are added, acting as screens at the crease and shooter positions (moving with the shooters to help the screen be effective), which helps players get the feel for more of a game-like situation. The dummy defender could be a volunteer (or appointed by the coach), otherwise after shooting the shooter becomes the "dummy." Dummy defenders should also be encouraged to practice corralling rebounds off of the goalie (shooting if it's there) before switching lines.
Variation #7 (7 min): "Quick Stick Finish." Same as the variations above except players are asked to finish with a quick stick shot on net.
Variation #8 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #9 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #10 (7 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the intended player while looking at another player or the goalie.
