Defense Drill #8: “Trail Check” Drill
- Demo (1 min): Trail Checking
- Arrange players in one or both ends of the floor depending on numbers, at the crease and shooter or mid-boards and point areas of the offensive zone. Have them stationed on their proper floor sides, with the defender standing a step behind the offender, and a step in toward the inside lane. The other way to orient the drill is for defenders to start standing in the shooting lane, closing the gap and running a step past the offender ("over-committing"), putting them into the same relative position a step behind the offender except in a more dynamic and game-like fashion.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "On-Ball Trail." Each time the coach blows the whistle it alternates which sides turn it is, otherwise rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise. Players on defense try to not allow the player on offense to get a quality shot.
- After a player plays offense, they then move into the defensive position the next time around, either on the same-side (Variation #1A) or the opposite-side (Variation #1B). Have players switch starting positions (crease to shooter and vice-versa) halfway through the drill.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Off-Ball Trail." Same as the above variations except there is now a line of passers at the crease position, feeding passes to players cutting to the net from the off-ball shooter position.
The cutter then becomes the defender after the other side takes their turn (Variation #2A), or the cutter can run over to the opposite handed line of cutters and play defense (Variation #2B), eventually joining the line of "passers" at the crease position.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals (lefty's playing defense against the righty's and vice-versa), with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
