Offense Drill #5D: Alberta Off-Ball Pick (“Dump Passes”)
ADVANCED
- Begin in one or both ends of the floor with groups of lefts and rights on their proper floor side, in two different spots on the floor: high (near the point position) or down "low" (near the mid-boards or crease positions).
- The balls start up high with the ball carrier running to the point position, passing to the far-side mid-board, V-cutting to the middle and then picking at the same-side mid-board (off-ball). Depending on the position of the pick (north-south vs. east-west) the two players come off of the pick (in their respective "Lanes") and one of them receive a pass from the ball carrier who is moving their feet near the opposite mid-board. The passer can be told to pass to the shooter coming around the pick (Variation #1 - 5 min), or the roller (Variation #2 - 5 min). (Draw Diagram)
- Alternatively, the pick can also be made on-ball, with the ball carrier using the pick and sending a swing pass to the far-side and this player ultimately passing to the roller (Variation #3 - 5 min).
Variation #4 (15 min): "Force The Play." Have a coach (or volunteer player) cover one or the other passing option, ensuring that the passer makes the proper decision in determining who is open.
Variation #5 (15 min): "Dummy Defenders." Is the same as the variations above except there is a volunteer defender playing "soft" defense at the mid-board position on both sides of the floor. This volunteer can also "window wash" the passer while the pick is taking place on the other side of the floor.
Another option instead of a volunteer defender is for the first player in the mid-board line to play defense, later taking their turn on offense (after the other side takes their turn), switching to the point position line after they shoot.
Variation #6 (15 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
