Stickwork Drill #8B: “Post Up” Offense-Defense
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Posting Up, Fronting
- Variation #1 (7 min): "On-Ball." Players start lined up on their proper floor side crease position, with balls already in their sticks; the drill alternating from side to side each rep. One player from each line should be positioned with their back to the net, 45 degree angle from the near-side post, before eventually stepping towards the top-side (Variation #1A), or drop-stepping underneath (Variation #1B) of an imaginary defender, ideally shooting far-side. Players can also be given the chance to practice different series' of fakes on the goalie "in tight," practicing different patterns first against the boards and later against the goalie from varying distances; starting in perfect position (Variation #1C).
Variation #2 (7 min): "Adjacent Entry Pass." Have players line up at the shooter position, with balls, with one crease player from each side positioning themselves directly in front of the net (45 degrees off of the post), with their back to the net. The same-side shooter with the ball moves their feet and sends an entry pass into the player, who shoots far-side or throws a series of fakes. The passer then becomes the receiver of the pass after the other side takes their turn; with the previous receiver exiting back into line.
Variation #4 (7 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the post up player while looking at the goalie or another player. This is an advanced variation of this drill.
Variation #5 (15 min): "Dummy Defenders." Same as the above variations except a "dummy" defender plays soft defense underneath the crease player, allowing the entry pass (Variation #5A). Later on, a dummy defender can also be added to "window wash" the passer (Variation #5B). Players play offense, then move to playing defense before eventually switching lines.
Variation #6 (15 min): "Defensive Fronting." Same as the above variations except the defender now starts in a position where they are "fronting" the offender, working hard to deny the entry pass (Variation #6A). The drill commences on the coaches whistle at which point players begin fighting for position, with the passer sending the ball into the drill at the appropriate time; players are allowed 5 seconds max to pass, and then another 5 seconds max to play 1-on-1 if the offender catches the initial pass.
Eventually start the defender behind the player who is posting up again, playing live defense, with the defender trying their best to "front" the player in the post (Variation #6B). In this variation players can play lefty defense versus lefty offense or lefty defense versus righty offense and vice-versa; players can also play offense first and then defense, making the drill more difficult cardio-wise.
Variation #7 (15 min): "Live 2 Vs. 2." Same as the above variations except players play team offense for a maximum of 10 seconds, starting with a player posted up down low and setting an up-pick if the entry pass isn't available. Players can play lefty defense versus lefty offense (Variation #7A), or lefty defense versus righty offense, and vice-versa (Variation #7B). Players can also play offense first and then defense, making the drill more difficult cardio-wise (Variation #7C).
Variation #8 (15 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals (lefty's play defense against righty's and vice-versa), with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
