Warm-Up Drill #17C: Hockey Blue Line Drill (Diagonals)
ADVANCED
- Begin with 4 separate lines (as shown in diagram), or two lines of players and two coaches (not shown in diagram), each 5 metres back from the restraining lines, against the boards and facing the neutral zone.
- Variation #1: "Loose Ball Exchange." The drill reps always start with two players in diagonally opposite lines making eye contact (so they leave at the same time) then running forward and rolling a loose ball to the line (or coach) diagonally across from them (Pass #1).
- These two players are now running mirror image patterns. They scoop the ball, run to the face-off dot at centre-floor, then cut back towards the zone they started in and pass back (Pass #2) to the first player in the line on the opposite side of the floor (Variation #1A - 5 min), or the second player in the line they started in (Variation #1B - 5 min).
- A give-and-go pass is then exchanged with the original player who started the drill (Pass #3), who had cut to the net after making the first pass in the give-and-go.
- The two players who just received a pass after the loose ball exchange now get a ball from the player behind them in line, and are the next two to go in the drill (after making eye contact). Players exiting the drill should get in line on the opposite-side, in the same end of the floor; goalies switch ends halfway through the drill.
- Variation #1C (5 min): "Tic-Tac-Toe." This variation starts the same as Variation #1A/1B except it requires the player at the front of the line which doesn't receive the initial pass back to their line, to receive a pass (Pass #3) from the opposite-side (in the same end) and that player to pass it back to the player who started the drill (Pass #4).
Variation #2 (15 min): "Pass Exchange." Same as the variation above except players start with a pass to the diagonal line instead of rolling a loose ball.
Variation #3 (15 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
