Warm-Up Drill #17A: Hockey Blue Line Drill (Short Pass)
INTERMEDIATE
- Begin with 4 separate lines (as shown in diagram), or two lines of players and two coaches (not shown in diagram), each 5 metres back from the restraining lines, against the boards, and facing the neutral zone. The first and second players in each line need to be ready at all times.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "Give & Go." The drill reps always start with two players in diagonally opposite lines making eye contact (so they leave at the same time), afterward running forward and passing to the line (or coach) directly across from them (side-boards to side-boards).
- These two players are now running mirror image patterns. They cut up-floor, receive a give-and-go pass back from the line they just passed to, then pass again to the near-side line they are running towards, receiving a breakaway pass back from the second player in that line. (Draw Diagram).
The two players who just received a pass to start the drill now get a ball from the player behind them in line, and are the next two to go (after making eye contact). Players exiting the drill should get in line on the same-side, in the opposite end of the floor.
Overhand passing is the most accurate and should be promoted when players are uncontested in games. Players on the breakaway should also get on their proper floor side, taking a banana curl towards the net after receiving the pass.
Variation #2 (5 min): "Fake Series'." Coaches also have the option to tell a few players in line to throw specific fake series', mixing it up with different styles of shots being commanded (unbeknownst to the goalie).
Variation #3 (5 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
