Warm-Up Drill #16B: Face-Off Dot Drill (Long Pass)
ADVANCED
- Start with two lines, left’s and rights, in one end of the floor (facing up-floor), with players on their proper floor sides. 4 "volunteer passers" should also begin standing a few metres higher than the 4 shooter positions (near the hockey "face-off dots"), in both ends of the floor (2 + 2). These 4 players should also switch ends halfway through their turn as "passers," to ensure that all get an opportunity to practice the "long pass."
- The other option is for the two players who made the long pass to exit the drill after all players have gone through, with two new passers coming in and the two players who didn't exit becoming the players that make the long pass the next time through.
- Variation #2A (10 min): "Long Pass." One player starts with a pass to the volunteer in the far-end, at the far-side. This player then passes to the close end volunteer passer on the same-side, who then gives a lead pass back to the far-end player who is now breaking for a pass.
- The drill alternates from side to side, with the next player in the opposite line passing to the far-side once the player making the "long pass" receives the pass from the other volunteer passer on their side.
- Volunteer passers can also practice different release points, changing angles, and perhaps lobbing the ball, or throwing a bounce pass.
Variation #2B (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #2C (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
