Warm-Up Drill #2B: Line Shuttles (Staggered & Transition)
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Cutting, Passing Lanes, Flat Passes
- Variation #4 (5 min): "Staggered Passing Shuttle." Lines can also be moved to a "staggered" position (i.e. both lines move 5 metres to their left) to practice cross-body passing.
- The first player in each line begins with a short run straight forward (one being in possession of the ball), with the ball carrier passing to the player running diagonally opposite from them (10 metres apart). The two "shuttle" lines continue passing to each other, being sure not to creep towards the other line; instead staying on a straight path until after they've passed. Make sure the player receiving the ball also doesn't leave too early, which can disrupt the timing of the drill.
- Switch the sides of these lines (i.e. both lines move 10 metres to their right) after 2-3 minutes (strong hand only); the restraining lines can be a helpful landmark in orienting the players. Variations #2C to #2F may also be applied to this variation or either of the variations below.
- Variation #5 (5 min): "Transition Passing Shuttle." Have players lined up in two lines facing each other (approximately 15 metres apart - east-west in orientation), near the shooter positions, in one or both ends of the floor; one line starting with a ball. Lines can also be oriented lengthwise (north-south) and moved further apart for more of a cardio effect.
- The first player in each line moves 3 metres to the side, while the second player in each line is ready to catch and then throw a pass. The first player runs a few metres forward then "cuts" hard across the middle (Variation #5A) or a couple of metres further and button hooks back to the ball (Variation #5B), calling for a pass. Once the ball is caught, this player passes to the second player in the opposite line, who repeats the said action (players go to the back of the opposite line upon completion).
- The first player leaves as soon as the second player catches the ball and the second player moves to the first player’s spot after they pass. Both the passer and catcher have to keep their feet moving in order to avoid "flat passes," and the catcher should also give a target where they want the ball to be passed (mix it up). Switch which side of the line that the receiver starts on halfway through the drill.
Variation #6 (5 min): "Relay Shuttles." Use the same patterns as the variations above, with coaches identifying a certain number of cycles through the shuttle without a dropped ball, or a set amount of time counting consecutive catches (starting at zero if a ball gets dropped), that each shuttle group (team) has in order to determine a winner.
