Half-Floor Man Press
ADVANCED TRANSITION SET
- Generally speaking, the "half-floor man press" is a reverse-transition strategy used with the intention to strip the other team of the ball and/or give the other team’s offense less time to set-up. This press is mostly employed when the teams have the offensive long change (1st & 3rd Period), as there is less chance of offensive specialists getting caught on defense (if using the offense-defense transition system).
- Certain scenarios may encourage players to take risks and try to strip the ball from the opposing team during this “press,” for instance after a turnover on a power-play with the addition of a double-team (a Special Situation called a "powerplay press"), or when needing to get the “Ball Back” late in a game. Otherwise, this press is usually only continued to centre-floor and then abandoned for a set-defense if possible.
- As soon as the offense loses the ball players need to call out and shadow their check (players must be prepared to play “both ways”); looking for adjacent slides and opportunities to double team near the boards.
- The "last player back" has the sole responsibility as rover, defending against fast-break opportunities and allowing teammates time (if possible) to recover back to the defensive side of their opponent (chasing).
Any bench-side players who were applying initial pressure should quickly line-change when their opponent line-changes, which may require their teammates to continue pressing-up from the back-door (if the opponent hasn't yet crossed centre-floor).
This is a general structure, but it rarely commences exactly how it’s drawn up. Defenders need to lock-off passing outlets, "shadow" their check closely, and slide at the right times (anticipate), in order for this system to be effective.
