Stickwork Drill #9A: “Quick Stick” (Passing)
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Quick Sticks - Soft Hands, Quick Release
- Arrange players into groups of 4, in a square formation, spread out all over the floor.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "3 Balls." This variation is for beginner and intermediate players. Designate one player to start without a ball; all three other players start with a ball. Whoever is the designated player without the ball starts the drill by making eye contact with one of the three other players. Whoever the designated player looks at passes the ball, ideally into “the box,” with the player receiving then passing the ball back, in one quick motion.
-
- If beginners are unable to perform a "quick stick" they can just try to catch and then pass, gradually building up their speed (Variation #1A).
-
- Coaches should allow 30-60 seconds until players switch roles, with every player eventually getting a chance to practice their quick stick. Players can compete amongst each other to see how many successful quick sticks they can complete (in a row) without dropping a pass (Variation #1B). If a pass is dropped, this player must start their count again from zero (coach takes a tally at the end).
Variation #2 (5 min): "2 Balls." Same as the above variations except that only two of the three passers start with a ball. In this variation it is up to the designated player to pass the ball they receive to the other player without a ball (which constantly changes); the balls are ultimately being passed much faster than Variation #1. (Draw Diagram).
Variation #3 (5 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches instruct players to make a certain type of pass: overhand, side-arm, underhand or bounce pass.
Variation #4 (5 min): "Add Defense." Same as the above variations except there are defenders in the passing lane, trying to pick-off the passes. Get two groups to compete against each other to see who can complete the most passes in 30 seconds, with winning teams moving on in a winners-go-on format, while the losers can do a consolation round.
Variation #5 (5 min): "Consecutive Catches Game." Same as the above variations of the drill except have players keep track of how many times in a row their group catches the ball without a drop. If a ball is dropped that group must start their count over from zero.
Variation #6 (5 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the intended player while looking at the goalie or another player.
