Defense Drill #7: “Recover” Top-Side
- Demo (1 min): Clamping, Off-Ball Cutters
- Arrange players in one or both ends of the floor depending on numbers. Have them stationed on their proper floor sides, with a defender standing underneath and facing the shoulder of the offender (in an "open stance"), positioning themselves so that they are deliberately giving up the top-side (inside lane).
- *Variation #1 (10 min): "From the Crease." Have one volunteer, or appointed player from each line, start on defense at the crease position. Each pair should start hip-to-hip with their feet running parallel to each other, with the defender in an open stance; stick in the "clamped" position. Each time the coach blows the whistle it alternates which sides' turn it is.
- After a player plays offense, they then move into the defensive position the next time around, either on the opposite-side (Variation #1A) or the same-side (Variation #1B); eventually exiting the drill after playing defense.
- *Variation #2 (10 min): "From the Shooter." Is the same as the above variations except starting from the shooter position, giving the offensive player a bit more room to work with, especially when considering there are no other defenders there to help when their teammate gets beat; which would be the likely scenario in a game.
*Variation #3 (10 min): "Off-Ball Cutter." Same as the above variations except there is a coach or player on the far side who attempts to pass a ball to the off-ball cutter; both players leaving on the coaches whistle. If players are acting as passers they pass first, cut from off-ball second and then play defense third (after the other side takes their turn).
*Variation #4 (10 min): "Low Defender." Same as the above variations except there is a low defender playing positional defense on the same side as the offensive player, attempting to stand in the shooting lane of the ball carrier while they play 1-on-1 against the other defender. The low defender can also provide help if the ball carrier comes anywhere in their vicinity, but they are not allowed to take more than 3 steps max.
The rotation through this drill is to play offense, play on-ball defense, then play as the low defender; eventually exiting to the back of the line on one's proper floor-side.
For intermediate players, using a tennis ball in this variation is sometimes better, to build up the courage of the low defender to stand in the shooting lane; putting their body on the line to try to block the shot.
Variation #5 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals (lefty's playing defense against the righty's and vice-versa), with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
*The defender has done their job if they are able to "get on gloves," force a shot from the wrong-side, or somehow force the offender underneath
