Cardio Drill #9: Edmonton Off-Ball Drill
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Off-Ball Work – Creating Space, Pick & Pop, Back-Door Cutting
- Arrange the team equally on both sides of each restraining-line, with all players facing in toward centre-floor. Another option is to build a designated playing area using pylons (especially for smaller groups). One side is “Team 1,” the opposite side is “Team 2” (make more creative names if possible).
Variation #1 (10 min): "Individual Battle." Start with 1 volunteer (or appointed player) from each team, playing 1 versus 1. The coach dumps a loose ball somewhere in the playing area and whatever player corrals the ball, they try to pass it back and forth with their teammates for as long as possible, while the other player plays defense.
The “defenders should” cover (clamp) the “catchers” as best as possible so they cannot catch an open pass from the “passer.” The passer and the catcher must communicate, while the catcher moves around to try and get open; the catcher uses their stick as a target showing where they want the ball to be passed. Play continues until there is a turnover, at which point the other team gets an opportunity; play being dead after both players have had a turn on offense.
Players on the restraining-lines cannot interfere with the play, but if the ball is about to bounce over the line it is encouraged that they bat the ball back into play. Otherwise, they should try and ensure that they are evenly spaced across the line in order to stop balls from exiting the drill.
Nobody can hold onto the ball for more than 5 seconds or it becomes a turnover and the other team gets the ball. The first team to 20 successful passes wins the game.
Variation #2 (10 min): "2 Vs. 2." Start with 2 volunteers (or appointed players) from each team. Each 2 versus 2 begins with a loose ball and whatever team corrals the ball becomes on offense, trying to pass it back to a teammate on their side of the restraining-line, completing as many successful passes with their teammates (on the restraining lines) as possible (Variation #2A). The other group plays defense and does whatever they can to get the ball back (communication + switching is key).
This drill should also be done as a game: total successful passes completed by each team (game up to 20), interceptions count for minus one point; otherwise seeing which team can catch the most consecutive passes. All groups should play at a timed interval of 45 seconds maximum.
Coaches can also ask that players complete at least one pass to their partner before attempting to pass it back to their team, in order for the points to count towards their team total (Variation #2B).
Variation #3 (10 min): "3 Vs. 3." Same as the above variation except advance to 3 versus 3.
