5-On-5 Play #2B & Play #2C (Iso – “Bull Rush & Pop”)
INTERMEDIATE SET PLAYS
2B. Iso - "Bull Rush & Pop" (Off-Ball "Low")
- This set-play is a timing play that can be run with (as seen in diagram), or without a pick for the feeder.
- The ball starts on the weak-side and is passed over to the strong-side. While this is happening the off-ball crease player gets tight to their defender and makes eye contact with the passer. The passer acts like a threat, but instead passes to the off-ball crease player as soon as they "pop" off of their defender and flash their stick, receiving a pass for a quick shot (Option #1).
There is only a small window of opportunity for this play, so the passer needs to anticipate the play, and the ball should be in the crease players stick as soon as they flash their stick.
If they don't get good separation, the ball should be swung back to the weak-side shooter and quickly back to a cutter from the strong-side (Option #2); otherwise, it's best to just abandon the play and continue with a Freelance offense.
2C. Iso - "Bull Rush & Pop" (Off-Ball "High")
- This set-play is a timing play that can be run with, or without a pick for the passer (as seen in diagram).
- The ball starts on the weak-side and is passed over to the strong-side (not shown in diagram). While this is happening the off-ball shooter "bull rushes" their defender (driving them back as far as possible) while still making eye contact with the passer. The passer acts like a threat, but instead passes to the off-ball shooter as soon as they "pop" off of their defender and flash their stick, receiving a pass ideally for a quick stick shot (Option #1).
- There is only a small window of opportunity for this play, so the passer needs to anticipate the play, and the ball should be in the crease players stick as soon as they flash their stick.
