Offense Drill #6B: On-Ball Dummy Pick & Roll
INTERMEDIATE
-
- Have two players positioned at their proper floor side crease positions, one on defense, the other on offense with a ball. The rest of the players should be lined up on their proper side in two lines near the point position, with a lefty and righty both starting in the middle.
Variation #1 (7 min): "Down Pick." This is a down-pick scenario where the middle player picks for the same-side crease player (first engaging the player at the front of the other middle line), setting the pick on the hip of the "dummy" defender without (Variation #1A), or with (Variation #1B) a coach (or volunteer defender) forcing the play after the pick is set.
There are two options off of a pick: shoot (1) or pass (2). The player being picked for should "react" to which direction the pick is set, coming around the pick on either the top-side or board-side, with the "roller" taking the opposite “Lane” to the net (inside lane vs. outside lane).
The drill alternates from side to side in orientation with players first playing as the ball carrier (passer), next as the defender; lastly playing in the middle (picker), before eventually returning to the middle line.
Variation #2 (7 min): "Up-Pick." Same as the above variation except have two players positioned at their proper floor side shooter positions, one on defense, the other on offense with a ball. The rest of the players should be lined up on their proper side standing up near the rag-line, with two players ready in the middle, 1 lefty & 1 righty.
This is an up-pick scenario where the middle player picks for the same-side shooter (first engaging the player beside them in the middle), setting the pick on the hip of the "dummy" defender without (Variation #2A), or with a coach forcing the play after the pick is set (Variation #2B).
The ball carrier must read the direction of the pick (north-south or east-west) and react accordingly.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Mid-Boards." Same as the above variations except the middle player picks for a player at the same-side mid-board using an east-west pick (Variation #3A) or north-south pick (Variation #3B), with the player in the middle starting on top of the crease for the north-south variation.
Variation #4 (5 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, with the losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
Variation #5 (5 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
