Cardio Drill #8B: Shot & Breakaway Chase
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with half of the lefty's and half of the righy's at the shooter positions in opposite ends of the floor, on either the bench-side (as seen in the diagram) or far-side of the floor (switch halfway through the drill). The other half of each group should be in the defensive line in the opposite corner (low) and opposite end from that of the same-handed shooter line.
- Variation #1 (10-15 min): "1 Vs. 1." To start the drill, a shooter in one end of the floor steps in and takes a shot on the goalie. As soon as the ball leaves this players stick, the first player in the "defender" line takes off on a breakaway. The goalie, who has a pile of balls close by, picks one up and tries to pass it to this player, while the shooter chases down the breakaway.
- After the breakaway, the chaser joins the defense line and the players who had the breakaway join the shooter line. If using the Offense-Defense transition system, coaches may also choose to have offensive/defensive players jog back to their respective lines after completing the drill.
- Variation #2 (5-10 min): "2 Vs. 1." Same as the variation above except after receiving the pass from the goalie the first time down the floor for a breakaway, the defender joins a 2-on-1 going the opposite direction, before exiting the drill.
