Loose Ball Drill #4: Loose Ball Sans Pressure
- Demo (1 min): "Back-In" Rule
- Have a line of players on both sides of the coach (or one coach per line - not shown in the diagram), standing near the shooter position on both sides of the floor (coach standing a few steps in from the point position with balls - behind the players). The first player set to go in the drill should be facing their respective corner. This drill can take place in one, or both ends of the floor.
- Variation #1 (7 min): "Defensive Zone LB." The coach rolls/bounces the ball into one corner at a time, with the first player in line attacking and corralling the loose ball, then running it to the middle of the floor and putting it back in the pile (ball bag or bucket) in front of the coach. Players should alternate lines each time through the drill and coaches should mix in a variety of styles and locations of loose balls.
- Intermediate and advanced players can be asked to "scoop, tuck & turn," "scoop-to-triple threat," "scoop-to-triple threat-to-tuck & turn" or "scoop-to-tuck & turn-to-triple threat.
- Variation #2 (7 min): "Offensive Zone LB." Same as above except move the lines back closer to the restraining-lines, with coaches rolling/bouncing the ball off of the side-boards and players running in for a breakaway after collecting the loose ball. Alternate one side after the other, giving the goalies a few seconds in between shots.
- Players should exit the drill as quickly as possible after shooting, staying out of the way of the players in the drill and running into the opposite line (marked with pylons if necessary). Players will be starting the drill on their wrong floor-side half of the time if they switch lines each time and so should be taught to "drift" in the process of their breakaway; otherwise be made to start on their proper floor-side throughout the drill.
- Variation #3 (7 min): "Loose Balls Away." Same as the variation above except instead of rolling the ball against the side-boards, the coach rolls the ball "away" from the player (towards middle of the floor), hopefully timing it so the player has to try and scoop the ball before it rolls into the crease, attempting to finish "in tight."
