Defense Drill #9B: Close The Gap & Recover To Help
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): "Hot" Defender, Tightening Up
- Start with an offensive player at the shooter position (high), covered by a defender, on both sides of the floor; in one or both ends of the floor. Players waiting to enter the drill should be standing on their proper floor side, near the restraining line.
- One of the two designated offensive players starts with a ball, with that defender's stick touching their gloves. The other defender should be "sagging" off of their check, standing in a "help" position in the middle (marked by a pylon where required).
- Variation #1 (7 min): "Footwork Only." The two shooters swing the ball back and forth, first waiting until the defender has arrived ("arrive in control"), then creating a passing lane. Once the ball is swung, the defender must quickly "sag" back into the off-ball help position, continuing in this manner for 10-20 seconds, at which point the coach blows their whistle and offensive players are free to take a shot or go 1-on-1 (2 vs. 2) for up to 5 seconds. Defenders clear out of the drill; offensive players move to defense.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Cross-Check." Same as the above variation except as the defender closes the gap, the ball carrier allows them to cross-check them before swinging it back to the other shooter.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Getting On Gloves." Same as the above variation except the ball carrier allows the defender to close the gap and get on their gloves with a couple of slashes before eventually swinging the ball.
Variation #4 (10 min): "Funnel Down." Same as the above variations except the defender pressures the offensive players top shoulder, forcing them to face dodge underneath and eventually curl out and swing the ball. The defender should do their best not to get beat clean underneath, and the offensive player should keep the defender honest and try to beat them top-side the odd time. However, this drill is mostly about defensive positioning/angles & footwork ("controlled pressure"), as opposed to offensive players competing for top-side positioning.
