Defense Drill #6B: 1 Vs. 1 With Off-Ball Help
ADVANCED
- Start with an offensive player at the mid-board (low), covered by a defender, on both sides of the floor; in one or both ends of the floor. Players waiting to enter the drill should be standing on their proper floor side, near the restraining line.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Fixed Help." One side of the floor has 5-10 seconds to go one on one, with the off-ball defender stationed in the middle (marked with a pylon if required) and the off ball offensive player standing at the shooter position.
- The off-ball defender is allowed to leave the middle and help (only once), having to stay and double-team the ball carrier once they commit. As soon as the off-ball defender commits, the off ball shooter is allowed to follow the slide into the middle and try to help create a passing lane for a shot.
- Players first play off-ball, then play on ball before rotating out of the drill. The other way to rotate through would be for players to first play off-ball offense, on-ball offense, off-ball defense, on-ball defense, then out of the drill.
- Variation #2 (10 min): "Dynamic Help." Same as the above variation except the off-ball defender is free to "show help," double-team (help) or stay on their check, depending on the variables of the situation.
- Variation #3 (10 min): "Adjacent Help." Same as the above variations except a token defender (fixed) is stationed at the crease position (marked with a pylon if required), "showing" help (1-step only - cross-checks, body checks & slashes) on-ball any time the ball carrier tries to go underneath, while the high defender plays 1-on-1 at the shooter position (Variation #3A). This drill can also be performed with the low defender playing 1-on-1 at the crease position and token adjacent help "showing" from the shooter position (Variation #3B).
