Warm-Up Drill #4B: Defensive Zone “Star” Passing
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with 4 mixed lines in the 4 corners of the defensive zone. Players start with two balls in opposite (kitty-corner) corners, with coaches having extra balls ready in case one gets dropped in the drill.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "Around The Perimeter." Players with and without the ball, start with a short run in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. They need to be careful about the timing and slow things down or speed things up, in order to keep the 2 balls diagonally opposite from each other as much as possible. They also need to make sure not to get too far ahead of the play, leaving their line too early before the ball is passed. After passing (Variation #1A), rolling loose balls (Variation #1B) or a combination of both (Variation #1C), players follow their pass and join the line of the player they just passed to, ultimately moving all around the defensive zone.
- Variation #2 (5 min): "Zig Zag Pattern." Same concept as the variation above except players pass to the line diagonally across the middle ("skip pass") and then make an adjacent pass across the top or bottom of the defensive zone. Players need to keep their heads up and be spatially aware as they run to the line they passed to.
- Variation #3 (5 min): "Chico's Full Floor Zig-Zag." Add 2 additional lines against the boards on both sides of centre floor, with 2 more lines in the corners at each end of the floor (6 lines total). Start with 2 or 3 balls in one corner, with the first player in this line taking a short run and passing to the line on the-opposite side at centre floor. The opposite side player passes to the far-side corner in the far-end (same side as the line that started with balls) and that player passes behind the net to the first player in the line in the other corner of that same end.
- The pattern then repeats itself the opposite direction coming back, with players passing to the line at the opposite-side of centre floor, who passes it to the remaining line in the opposite corner from where the drill started. This player then passes back to the first player in the original line that started the drill, who at this point should have no ball and continues the zig-zag pattern (Variation #3A). This drill can all also be run widthwise in the neutral zone, making for passes in a tighter space with more traffic (Variation #3B).
- For both variations, coaches should be ready with extra balls to send into the drill if there are any errant passes, in order to keep the flow of the drill.
