Offense Drill #11: “3 Player Cycling”
ADVANCED
- Arrange players in one or both ends of the floor depending on numbers. Have them stationed on their proper floor side, in the crease, shooter and point positions, in the offensive zone. Other players on the same-side set to go in this drill should be against the boards.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Strong-Side Skeleton." Players are encouraged to cycle through each floor position a few times, then the coach blows the whistle and a shot is taken; at which point the other side of the floor begins its turn. New offensive players (opposite-handed) should then enter the drill and all others should exit ("on the hop"), while the opposite side is taking their turn.
- Traditionally, there are 3 roles to be played on the strong-side: a shooter/playmaker ("1"), a picker/grinder ("2") and a "water bug" ("3") who is constantly keeping their feet moving and cycling/filling space. Advanced players may also practice set-plays, with coaches doing a walk through demo and players copying the sequence.
Variation #2 (20 min): "Dummy Defenders." The drill commences on one side of the floor with the crease and shooter first engaging their defenders then popping out, “flashing their stick,” prepared to receive a pass from the point player (or a coach can pass the ball into the drill). 3 defenders should be playing man-to-man contain defense (eventually advancing to 100% effort), with 3 offenders either freelancing or communicating a set-play (See 5-on-5 Set Plays) in advance of entering (or during) the drill.
Players should cycle through each floor position a few times, until they score or until the coach blows their whistle. At this point the offenders run to the other side of the floor and play defense against 3 new offensive players, with the former defenders exiting the drill ("on the hop").
Variation #3 (20 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals (lefty's playing defense against the righty's and vice versa), with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
