Warm-Up Drill #11: Bellies “Pick & Roll” Warm-Up
INTERMEDIATE
- This drill might seem counter-intuitive at first because “lefty’s” and “righty’s” are lined up on their wrong side of the floor (stick towards the boards). However, players should start in this orientation, a few metres off of the mid boards.
- Variation #1A (7 min): "Roll To The Net." The first player in both lines has no ball and, on their turn, runs over to the opposite-side line and sets an imaginary pick. As this happens, the second player from the same line as the first player passes a ball to the first player, as they roll to the net off of their pick for a shot. The first player from the opposite line then takes their turn, alternating from side to side each time through the drill.
- Variation #1B (7 min): "Fake Series'." Coaches also have the option to tell a few players in line to throw specific fake series', mixing it up with different styles of shots being commanded (unbeknownst to the goalie).
- Variation #2 (7 min): "Roll, Step & Shoot." Same as Variation #1A, except starting from slightly farther back, and taking a set-shot after picking, instead of rolling to the net.
- Variation #4 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #5 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
