Warm-Up Drill #13: 1 Pick, 2 Shots
INTERMEDIATE
- Have players line up in equal numbers at their proper floor side crease and shooter positions, on both sides of the floor, in one or both ends, with balls. Goalies switch halfway through the drill if it's commencing in only one end.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "Off-Ball Up-Pick." To start, the first player in line on one side will have balls (lefts or rights) and the other side (off-ball) has no balls. On the off-ball side, start with an up-pick from the crease player, doing a V-cut, then setting an imaginary pick at the same-side shooter position. The shooter then cuts around the pick toward the middle, receiving a pass from the opposite side crease position (Shot #1). The picker then "pops" up into the shooter position, receiving a pass from the opposite side shooter (Shot #2).
- Repeat the above actions with the opposite-side players who now have no balls, running another off-ball up-pick. The crease player picks for the same-side shooter, "pops" up into the shooter position, and both receive passes for shots one after another (1 second in between shots). (Draw Diagram).
Variation #2 (5 min): "Off-Ball Down-Pick." The same drill sequence can be done using a down-pick, with the shooter picking for the crease player who comes around the pick and up into the "soft spot" receiving a pass from the off-ball crease player for a shot (Shot #2); the picker rolls to the net, receiving a pass from the off-ball shooter for a shot (Shot #1).
Variation #3 (7 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches instruct players to take a certain type of shot: overhand, side-arm, underhand, cripplers or bounce shots.
Variation #4 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #5 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #6 (7 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the intended player while looking at the goalie or another player.
