Transition Drill #6A: Eddie’s Championship Drill
INTERMEDIATE
- Players should be divided equally on both benches and may be mixed, or have lefty's on one bench and righty's on the other. Two players should also be on the floor (in each end) near the far-side mid-board/crease and restraining-line/shooter positions to begin the drill (balls should be in a pile in the corner). (Draw Diagram)
Variation #1 (10 min): "Pass From Support Player." The drill starts with a player at the crease position passing the ball up to the player near the restraining-line (replicating having "run the ball deep"). At the same time a player should leave the bench and cut through the middle, in a "bench assist" "trailer" scenario. This player receives a pass from the far-side, takes a shot, then goes to the corner, gets a loose ball, and again passes it up to the player near the restraining-line (who took over this position after making the original pass).
The player that passed to the trailer then runs hard to the opposite bench (as if finishing a 90° line change after a successful breakout); or players can run to the same bench and the coach can switch the players on each bench halfway through the drill.
This cycle is repeated over and over until every player has had multiple reps in both ends; goalies should switch ends halfway through the drill. Players coming off of the bench on their "wrong floor side" should practice drifting once they've caught the pass.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Pass From Deep." Exactly the same as the above variation except the player near the restraining-line passes back down to the crease player, who subsequently makes the pass to the trailer cutting through the middle.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #4 (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
