Place 3 attackmen on the field (their positions can be changed based on what offensive sets your team may be using).
Place 3 close-defenders near the crease.
Place 3 offensive midfielders on the field in the following spots: Far-side faceoff wing, middle of the field just behind the half, bench-side faceoff wing behind the half).
*Prior to each rep, the offensive midfielders will determine which of them will call for the pass discussed later in this drill description.*
The coach will take a shot at the goalie. The goalie will then initiate the breakout by saying 'break'. The 3 close-defenders will then use the appropriate breakout pattern in an attempt to safely move the ball upfield with the help of the goalie. This will create a 4 on 3 breakout. Attackmen will chase the ball, and lock off all passes excluding the farthest pass. Attackmen will adjust positioning when the ball is moved. When the team clearing the ball nears the restraining line, the predetermined midfielder will call 'one-more'. The ball carrier will pass to that midfielder, who will then go to the net in a 4 on 3 fast-break scenario. Once the first pass of the fat break is made, the corresponding defensive player is released and must run hard to the 'hole' to sort, in an attempt to thwart the fast-break opportunity.
