Goaltending Drill #3A: Breakaway Competition
- Demo: Banana Curl
- Have players line up in two teams, at centre-floor, with one team lined up facing the goalie at one end, and the other team facing the opposite end. Teams are usually divided up as either lefty’s versus righty’s, or otherwise as offensive players versus defensive players.
- Variation #1 (7 min): "For Fun." Put one of the coaches in net during the breakaway competition, using soft balls/tennis balls.
*Variation #2 (10 min): "Team Competition." Each team sends one player at a time on a breakaway on the goaltender. Beginner & intermediate players should be encouraged to run at full speed, taking a “banana curl” towards the net, thus, staying on their proper floor side and getting best angle possible.
If one team scores and not the other at any time during the competition, the team that doesn't score must run from “side-boards to side-boards” before the next two players get to go.
Once everyone has shot on both teams, the team with the least amount of goals scored has to then sprint the length of the floor and back (keep track of total goals by each team).
*Variation #3 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add further competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Another way to set-up the game is two teams, one on each bench, with 5 (or 10) balls across the rag-line.
One player comes off each bench at a time and if the player misses their shot they have to scoop the rebound, put the ball back on the rag-line and get in the bench before the next player comes off of the bench for their turn. If the shooter scores, the next player is allowed to come on immediately.
*Variation #4 (15 min): "Individual Competition." "Every player for themselves" continuing until one player scores 3 goals in a row (all players having a chance for a rebuttal).
*Variation #5 (15 min): "Hit The Net Game." Same as the variations above except for every ball that misses the net during the drill (until everyone has shot once) players have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other; starting from zero each time after everyone has shot.
*Most common error = Goalie standing too deep in the net, failing to challenge the shooter.
